With well ported heads , that cam and the right valve springs and free breathing exhaust the lil 283 will really want to rev up.
6800 rpm. It won;t get real busy until about 3200+rpm.
what is the rear gear ratio and the trans ratios. rear tire diameter. ??
What is the casting number on the heads?
Define "some porting" the lil 283 really wants to breath.
The 305 heads need a good amount of porting to wake them up.
Yours may need some more work. (When it comes to porting 305 heads or other stock SBC heads) Most people don't take it far enough.
You cannot over port these heads. You got to open them up especially to see the gain of the larger valve. The port and the valve have to work together (felpro 1205 gasket as a guide)
All the 305 heads are pretty lame in stock form. Need judicious porting.
This is very critical to making horsepower.
This is the time to fix them up before you bolt them on.
The other parts of the puzzle have to "be on the same page" to allow the cam to do its stuff.
