283 Chevy engine id questions

I have what appears to be 2 1963 Chevy 283's. They both have the same code on them in virtually the same location, back of engine on driver's side. My question is why is the date stamp in 2 totally different locations?? One engine has the date stamp on the back driver's side corner next to the engine id. The other has it's date stamp on the back passenger side. Both seem to correspond to 1963. Why the different date stamp locations? One is out of an original 63 Impala SS (the one with both stamps on driver's side). I have no idea what the other is from. Is it possible that GM made different blocks for Impala's, Vettes, etc.?

The numbers on the front passenger side of the block are as follows-TO5I4D on the SS motor, TO2I9D on the unknown origin motor. Any ideas?

How can that be when the date codes are both 1963? Something's not adding up.

Likely due to the list is not complete, There`s many blocks still out there that can`t be ID`d by the suffix code due to this. Are you certain what your looking at is the date code? while the date code is usually on the bellhousing of the block, it usually looks like this example: A 7 8 which breaks down into A = January 7 = 7th day of that month 8 = 1958, 1968, 1978 etc. all you have to do to have the idea of the correct year is look up the casting numbers and see what years those blocks were produced. But the suffix code also has the date break down on it, you can look this up at nastyz28.com and the like. I have several blocks that are 350`s that I can`t locate any info on the suffix code. But since GM blocks were used in other vehicles, like Isuzu cab over trucks, I don`t know what suffix code they would carry. And sometimes there won`t be a suffix code, only a code of CE which indicates a engine of any displacement and is a warrenty engine, the CE code was used from 1968 on, I don`t know what code replacement warrenty engines used on engines prior to 1968. Sometimes the same suffix code was used on a different displacement engine used many years later. Just wanted to shed more light on the subject. I did some digging and found further information on the suffix code D:
D 1960 283 170 2 Powerglide
D 1958 283 185 2 Powerglide
D 1961 283 170 2 Powerglide
D 1963 283 195 2 Powerglide
D 1962 283 170 2 Powerglide
D 1964 283 195 2 Powerglide

Thanks for all the info guys. I can only assume they are both 63 motors as I read them. What I can't figure out is why the date codes are in 2 totally different places when they were both manufactured in Tarytown NY only a couple of months apart. Just seems odd to me. Like I said earlier, the first motor is definitly an original 63 ss impala 283. I have the car that goes with it. The second is in another 63 impala, but it's not original to that car. I was just wondering why the discrepencies between the 2. Other than the date code issue, they seem to be identical motors.

I bet that date code was cast in using some kind of plate that was slapped on the mold at the last minute, with the position being whatever was convenient to the worker who slapped it on, right-handed, left-handed, bored with that side today, etc.
