283 Heads Question

I've got a 66 283 out of a chevy truck and the casting numbers say they are a 60cc chambers. Now I planned to put new valve guides in them, install hardened exhaust valve seats, new stainless valves and port and polish the heads too. Is this worth it? Never heard of 60cc heads and what I read at Mortec they were marked "Made In Canada" and also used in the Studebaker. I personally think this is a good thing but I would like some feedback from the membership to what you guys think. Thanks

283 heads

let me guess they are either 520 or 896 castings 283 heads are good the low cc will give you more compression but they only have a 1.72 in valve and 1.5 ex it all depends on what kind of power you are looking for plus there are no accesory holes drilled in them , Tom

I do have a set of 350 heads that are 75 cc chambers. They were used on the 307 & 350 motors from 72 tp 73. Would they be a better head to use. I'm just trying to find a good head to use on my 283 to give it a little more power. I will also do the same to these 350 heads (re work) as the 283 heads.

You definately need those small chambers on a 283, 55cc would even be better. I'd also use a steel shim head gasket like the factory did or again you'll lose compression. You should be able to open up the intakes for 1.94 valves and do some port work for more power.

Late model H.O. 305 heads would save you some time with the machine shop and they have bolt holes for accessory attachment.

Well I guess the best thing to do is look for a set of 305 heads for now. If I can't find a set then it will be the 283 heads for now. Thanks guys I really appreciate the info.

I agree, a set of casting number 416 heads will work nicely, best thing is there cheap and the junk yards are full of`em. They come with 1.84 intake valves, you can have these moved up to the 1.94 intake size but if you are to do so have the chamber deshrouded. But honestly, since it`s a 283, I`d just use the 1.84 valve, as it`s better than the 1.71 valves the 283 heads came stock with.
