I just accuried a 1961 chevy half ton truck it has a 283, very gummed up it has an automatic trans. I am cleaning it up and would like to know the best way to get fuel milage and horsepower out of my motor. poeple keep telling me that the 283 was discontinued because you could obtain stagering fuel milage but none of them know how, can anyone help.:welcome:
As one of the Moderators here.....let me be the first to WELCOME YOU. :welcome:
283's can get very good mileage. I have one in my 1940 Ford.
Use a small 4V carb, good intake, good ignition (I use a MSD small HEI) and dual exhaust. A gear ratio of 3.0 to 3.25 also helps.
I had one in a 55 Chevy 150 sedan and got 20 miles per gallon real easy.
Let's start a 283 support group!
Welcome aboard. You can get respectable performance out of a 283 if you keep one very important thing in mind: It is a 283!
Do some searches. There are good recommendations on carbs, intakes, and cams that can help you out. Vortec heads would be a good way to go.
