looks like fun, but everyone has a sbc. Jeep inline sixs can be built on a budget... lots of guys swap 4.0 heads (91-95 are best) onto a 258, and others swap a 258 crank into a 4.0 (242ci) block, and I believe some guys who build them for high performance limited use (racing) can bore them out to a 4 inch bore. Watch the rod/piston combo though, being racing you'll be revving it more and I'm not 100% sure which is best. I can ask that 'dino' guy who has the naturally aspirated Jeep engine build site what he'd recommend. I'm on the same Jeep forums as him... and a lot of other guys, such as Jeepspeed (Jeep only baja racing).

Come on Jeepracer!! How old are you??? 16...17?! You went from a 500HP 283...to a 350HP 283 to 6cylinder Jeep?! At LEAST...before you ask the question...DECIDE what you want outta what kind of engine. So far...this has all been "pie-in-the-sky" what-if stuff! These guys give you the combo to make your "dream" work...and then you jump to something TOTALLY different! Maybe you should just hang with your pal and HIS high HP 283 Jeep and maybe get some seat time in his ride...until you decide to get serious and come up with a firm plan. THEN start asking questions and getting advice. I wasn't even one to go to the trouble and thought like Eric and all the others....and it frustrated the crap outta me!! Jeessh fella!!!!

i dont know what i want to do yet. yea i messed up sayin i wanted 500 hp but its not like i sat there and purposly let them write all the info without tellin them. i thought about how 500 hp was too much the next day and realized i dint need that much. as for the jeep one, i was "curious" as to how much power it made.

JP magazine's turbo 4.0 build...
690HP and 780 lb ft

I posted the link to the magazine article (I think you can save it as a pdf file) in a previous post.

The nonturbo 4.0 strokers (4.6-4.8L... some guys get gutsy and do 5.0 builds on the ol inliner) depends on the build...

'budget'
240hp @ 4700rpm, 315lbft @ 3000rpm

Hesco Crate Jeep inline six
267hp @ 4700rpm and 332lbft @ 3400rpm

They have buildups to about 345hp.

If you want a 'out of the box' stroker, get a 91-95 4.0 HO head, (look up how to do the head swap, its not that bad) and put it on the 258 block that I assume you already have in your Jeep. Add a Schneider cam (or Comp cam if you dont wanna be different) and run it!

Another benefit: going without the turbo six at least, you won't need to totally beef up your driveline, which gets expensive really fast!

sorry its an old thread, but it disturbes me when people say a 302 had a 283 crank in it...

they didnt...it was a WHOLE new casting. If you put a 283 crank into a 327/350 block, it would have a lot of room to wiggle around lol...

i appologize once more...

the 302's were small journal just like the 283, and some 327's... There wouldn't be much wiggle room.

The 68's were large journal, the 67's were both...so I guess it could fit into a 68 block...or any other small journal 4 inch bore block.

1967 Z/28 302 SBC engines got SJ forged steel cranks.

1968-'69 Z/28 302 SBC engines got LJ forged steel cranks.

There may have also been some SJ engines in '68, during the "crossover".

It would be more exiteing than 200hp in a 5000lb truck like i have.

SS crank

I have a 283 that regularly pulls 7k. I built it with an ss crank. I haven't read to the end of the post thread yet, but it's great to see someone who has the ambition to build something that most would not consider. I built my 283 5 years ago and my only regret was to have not drilled a whole in the end of the crank to retain my harmonic balancer.

Everyone thinks I have a big block. I stomp a c6 vette with a '63 nova that an aquaintce drives on a regular basis. I call it the corvette killer.
