Take that 283 put it in a vega. You will get the power and MPG. Or better yet, Build a Rat Rod

283's are a great base for a supercharged motor using a Weiand 142 blower.
A low compression ratio is desired.
Any of the modern heads can be used on a 283 including L-31 vortecs.
305HO heads are popular. and work great when ported w1.94x 1.60 valves.
The 58cc L-98 ZZ4 350HO aluminum head is great on 283's too.
Does the 283 have flat top or domed pistons?

A low compression blown 283 with reworked ported modern heads will work great in a 4x4. big power in a small package.

high perf 283's like to rev up and like aggressive rear gearing. Especially in a 4x4 with tall tires.

what heads do you got laying around? casting number..
Does the street supercharged 283 interest you?
not hard to do. Big results.

There are lots of ways to build up a powerfull 283. Getting the heads and compression ratio right is critical.
Most of the 283's were low perf low compression engines with lame small port small valve heads.
But thats easy to fix. lots of good ways to skin this cat with very impressive results.
Does the 283 have flat top or domed pistons? standard bore or... What matters is if the basic 283 short block is in good condition or needs rebuilding. Do a compression test.
Don't be so ready to ditch this motor.

I used to race it in the mudd, but that is over. now its just for offroading purposes only or weekend beast. Rockcrawling and what ever I can find to climb. I havnt taken it apart yet and looked inside or did any measurements, sooo I am probably going to check it out and see.

Do a compression test before taking it apart.
