283 small block/Vortec heads combo

Hello. I have a 283 punched .030 (288 c.i.) with stock heads. I have a pair of vortec heads with 1.94 and 1.50 valves. Will the vortecs work with the 283 punched out to .060, or are the valves still too big? I believe the combustion chambers on the vortec heads will also lower the compression a bit on the 283. If the heads won't work, I'm just going to get a 350 or 383 short block. Thanks.

Does your 283 have a dome piston or a flat top piston?

Assuming you had a 283 +.060 with stock deck height, stock type flat top pistons (somewhere in the ball park of -13cc), 64cc vortec heads, and a steel shim gasket (.020 compressed thickness), you would be sniffing around 8:1. Even if you zero decked the block, you would be in the neighborhood of 8.35:1 with everything else being the same.

I would be looking for some kind of dome piston if you go with the vortecs. Try Egge, i think they make the dome GM style 283 pistons that the corvette's used when the first double hump heads came out.

The vortec valve size should work. The heads would work very nicely if you can get the compression ratio up towards 9-9.5:1. With a good steet cam, 600cfm carb, and a good gear, it would be a peppy one. With a small cam, it would make for some good mpgs.

Thanks all. The 283 has flat top pistons and the cam I chose is similar to an RV grind so I can get some more torque in the low rpms.

M&L:

if you just bolt the vortecs on you flat top piston 283 the comperession ratio
will be quite low.

You can shave the vortec heads approx .040" to reduce the chamber volume.

You want a finished measured 58cc chamber.

A local automotive machine shop can do the machine work for you.

Install with a shim style thin .015" head gasket Felpro #1094

Your cr will be 9.27:1 based on a .025" piston deck clearance at TDC.

You can verify this when you get your old heads off the motor.

Get a mild short duration (195 to 208 deg @.050") cam with .465" lift or less. It is very very easy to over cam a 283. Do not get carried away with the cam.

You'll need some self aligning type rockers '87+ sbc, centerbolt valve covers and a vortec pattern 4bbl intake manifold.

Vortec heads have a casting number ending in 906 or 062.
Anything else is not a real vortec head.
