283 upgrade
Hi Guys,
I have a 283 in a 65 pickup. So far, i have added a 500 cfm holley and that's about it. It is rated at 220 hp stock with a 4bbl. I am going to add a weiland intake, headers, an HEI dist., 305 heads, and a holley 600cfm carb with vacume secondaries and manual choke. Can anyone recommend what cam i should use. (just for driving - if I tow anything at all it will be a little 12 ft trailer with a lawnmower) Also, if anyone could give me an estimate of what kind of hp i will be turning, i would apreciate it. Thanks |

As a Moderator here ... I want to WELCOME YOU here ... ![]() I would suggest keeping the smaller 500 CFM Holley On my 283 ( bored .060 ) and with a 097 Duntov camshaft ... the 500 cfm runs better. Better mileage also. It gives up a tad of HP past 4500 RPMs ... but HOW OFTEN do you rev your engine that much ?? again WELCOME ... Deuce ... Moderator |

Probably not a lot of hp. I read that even the factory-rated 270hp (dual quad version) was only 190 hp by today's standards of rating.
