283 V-8 or 4.3 V-6...decisions, decisions :)

Ok folks, I'm getting ready to put my 1936 Chevy truck back on the road and have come to a point where I have to make an un expected decision. All through high school and college I drove this truck with a mildly built 283. It was a nice running truck and dependable as a rock, but many, many miles (most of which were hard miles) took their toll on the truck and I began a major overhaul almost 10 years ago. The bodywork is almost done and before long I'll be putting things back together but now I need to decide on a powerplant. The old 283 has been bored .060" and the short block is ready to go. My plans had been to top this engine off with a set of open chamber heads, twin turbos, and a tuned port injection system and drop it back in my truck. I've recently come into possesion of a early 90's model 4.3 V-6 that has just been rebuilt with some nicely beefed up internals. I've been thinking that it might be fun to drop the turbos on this engine instead of the 283. What would be the pros and cons of each engine in your opinions??? Size wise the 4.3 is not much smaller than the 283, and with the turbos power will be more than adequate with either engine so which would you pick if you were in my shoes???

Thanks!

If nobody is going to reply, I'll offer an opinion,
As much as I love the sound of a V8, in this case I think I'd use the 4.3 V6.
As you said, the difference in displacement isn't much, and you gain some in technology with the newer engine design. Also, the V6 is shorter which will give more room for the turbo(s).
Just my opinion,
JA

283

I would go with the 283 and box the 4.3 for the future. I am running a 4.3 and I am going to rebuild a 283. I am looking forward to the sound, smoothness and the revability of the V-8. On the other hand the 4.3 will provide a bigger engine compartment...

I'd go with a 283... more period correct, plus you can't beat the original sbc! (okay, the real first sbc was back in 1918 or something, but there are only 3 or so left and have basically no performance value whatsoever)

The 283. Higher revs 'cuz of the 3" stroke. Easier to find parts, anything sbc should work. 21 extra cubes stock. and they look cooler shoved in a little engine bay.

a far as technology goes- there's a lot more for SBC engines than the 4.3L.... I would go V-8 for the sound, part availability, and tunability... the ONLY advantage I see with the 4.3 is the few inches of space you'll save in the front...

i too have a 4.3 v-6,and swapped it out for a 283.im kind of in the same situation now.i want to build the v-6 w/turbos but i built the v-8 first.all because that was my original plan.stick to the plan or you will lose sight of your project.and your wallet.the v-6 is decidedly more expensive to build,i spent around 4500 on the v-8,top to bottom, inside and out.the v-6 would probably run around 7-8 grand for my paticular build.it will get built someday, but i wanna turn the v-8,that is the plan.

I would run the V8 for the sound and for nostalgia sake since its the motor you've been running with this truck since you got it-

I dont know much, but I would pick the V8 over the V6 anyday, there is no replacement for a Small block chevy.

IMO, I would go with the 283 for sure. Not only for sound but for parts and less complication with wiring. But a 283 with twin turbos headers and 2.5-3.0" dual exhuast and blow off valves whew that would be a head turner for sure.

The thought of a 283 under boost at 7K makes me horny. The V6 will sound just like a V6, flat and boring.
