This may be a dumb question but I put a new clutch/pressure plate on a new flywheel on a 289 Ford. The flywheel is a 28 oz. 157 tooth steel and the clutch kit is Ford Racing part number FMS-M-7560-A302N. I bought a bolt kit FMS-M-6397-A302. The problem is, the first go on tightening the bolts into the flywheel, they were really tight and I actually broke one off. Fixed that, bought new bolts, installed again. This time, got everything torqued down to 20 lbs. but now, the pressure plate doesn't mate flush with the flywheel. It is about 1/8" away from being flush. I lined the clutch up with the pilot tool so the clutch should not be off center. The pressure plate lines up with the dowels and the bolt holes. It doesn't seem right - I don't want to move forward until I know. Any advice?
If all the parts are correct you will have to pull those bolts down and compress the springs on the clutch. Tighten each one a little at a time until you reach the proper torque. By the way if I remember right those are special grade 8s with a shoulder on them.
Thanks for the help. I will check the bolts to make sure they are 5/16. They sure did act like they were a misfit. But, I think I'll tighten up to 30 as suggested. I'm a little gun shy after breaking one off on the first go. Not much fun drilling out and tapping so would like to avoid. Thanks again.
The shoulders on the bolts could be to long, the alignment studs could be binding or the holes a hair to small, could be a disk issue. Try mounting the plate without the disk and see if it sits flush.
20lbs seems a little light. The PP spring is pretty heavy. You should be able to bring those grade 8 bolts up to 40-50 with no chance of breaking. did you try running the bolts in without the PP to see if the shoulders bottom against the flywheel. It os also possible the threaded section is to long
the mis match Metric VS std , the wrong bolts would go in about a 1/4 inch before not feeling right.
