Give some details, are you going to stroke it ? buy used parts? ie roller cam, alum. heads? gas or alcohol ? injected or carb ? unlimited compression?

i want the smallest cubic inches as possible. i can buy used parts. i want stock cast iron heads. whatever size cam that will get me to 350 hp. gonna run 110 race fuel with a carb. and i like the sound of high compression so yes, unlimited compression.

I'd go with the chevy, 283 high compression pistons show up at the swap meets, and craigs list, ebay. I bought a new set of 327 trw .150 dome pistons a couple of years ago at the Decatur swap meet and they turned out to be 302 pistons, you can't tell without looking up the numbers! I just pulled the 302 out of my 55 drag car, I don't know how much hp it made ,but it's best in a 3500 lb. car was 7.85 in the eighth, it has brodix heads and a Predator, and it had a 4-speed .

your goal 350HP/283 cubes= 1.23 HP per cube...

that's not a used parts/junkyard parts cheap motor...

and it is a "race only" high narrow rpms operating range motor,,,not suited for the street...

suggestion:
go buy a "how to build a high performance motor book" at your local parts store and study it carefully...

red65mustang, i have a suggestion for you, stop posting ******* comments like "go buy a how to (insert moron quote here) book", try actually being helpful instead of one of those nitwit naysayers all the time, you said 600 hp/600 trq wasnt possible in N/A a 496 stroker, but it happens every day. stop being a dick and get off your pedestal man.

you want a 350/383 stroker then.. you need the low RPM torque.. 283/289 isn't going to provide what you need. there going to make there power in the higher RPM's where you won't need when offroading

Have you thought about a turbo system. The 289 is a quick revving, well balanced engine and with the right cam, you wouldn't need pistons and 110 race gas!

Just an idea.

Poncho, I love you man .
Now back to the OP. I know either engine can make pretty good screamers, But like Sqzbox said the 289 high revving little engine the right cam and heads it's gonna scream trust me. I did one for my 65 a few years ago comp cam kit heads stock heads reworked 3 angle valve job comp springs screw in studs and guide plates. Edelbrock performer intake with a 600 Holley, That thing is still screaming if i can find or remember the cam specs i will post them for you. This is all JMO.
