Post 289 idling issues

My cars in time and everything and im using a small electric fuel pump.stock ones no good.My question is my car starts fine if the gas is to the floor but it wont idle below around 3000 RPMs I set the idle high but nothing below the stated rpm levels. Soon as I let off the gas it dies.Could the carb be bad,is the fuel pump to small? Helps appreciated.

Had an engine run all wacky like that one time turned out to be a missing vacuum plug to the intake.

Fuel pump should produce a minimum of 7 lbs, you might want more for hi perfomance engine.

Another thought on having to hold the pedal to the floor. Usually this is done when the carb is flooding. Is your choke in good shape and set properly.

my choke is being held open by a screw driver may sound funny but I spent what money I had on rebuilding the engine my girlfriends having a baby in 4 weeks so I have to trade around to get the parts I need moneys getting tight and I cant even afford to buy a used carburator and the electric fuel pumps about wore out

Possible major vacuum leak. Pinch off brake booster hose with a pair of locking vice grips and retest. Check all vac connectors and hoses. Check pcv to see if it has come apart inside. Did you have the carb off? Check carb base gasket to see if its installed backwards. What carb 2V 4V??
Possible idle circuit plugged.

I'll second the PCV check, as the same thing happened to me. When I bought the car it had no PCV valve, and wouldn't run unless I had the pedal to the floor. Once it warmed up it was fine though, is this the same case for you?

Actually once it warms up it will stay at a very high idle.
