290 Chevy Carb/ Intake Recommendations?

My teenage son & I are rebuilding a '74 camaro. We've purchased a 350 c.i./ 290 hp crate motor. Any suggestions for a carb/ intake combination? We (I) would like it to have respectable performance but still be a 'reliable daily driver'.

Any proven' performers/ suggestions?

Edelbrock Performer (not RPM) and either a 600 Holley or Edelbrock carb

AZ Willie
I recently put that same crate motor in my pickup and I run an Edlebrock preformer and 600 cfm holley carb.
BUT there are several other threads here about this engine on the Hotrodders forum most of the consensus is that you should change the cam because there is to much duration for the compression ratio and it will be a real turd.
I didn't change my cam but I did crank up the inital advance more than the recomended 10 degrees and hooked up vacuum advance and my manifold vacuum went up from 10 inches to 15 inches. Its not fully broke in yet so I haven't gotten on it yet but its only a daily driver.

Hey 57....speaking of the 290's duration, I took a short ride in a buddies '32 Victoria with a crate 290 hp engine. When he fired it up....and it also was brand new I asked him...are you sure this is a 290 hp engine?? The engine had quite a lope to it and you would swear it was a lot hotter than that. I've never looked up the spec's on a 290....think I will.

Yeah , my 290 hp cam has a Hell of a lumpy idle but after it comes up to operating temp 180 Degrees it's a little less lopey. Kind of like an old Duntov without the solid lifter clatter.

327nut the paper work I got with my crate motor says the cam specs are ,
lift intake .450" exhaust .460" duration @ .050" is .222" int. & exh.
centerline 114*atdc intake , 114*btdc exhaust.
Also says to set timing at 10* inital and 32* at 3000 rpm and don't run vacuum advance. Mine was a real turd with poor off idle throttle response. A friend of mine said crank up the timing , I have it set at about 18* and hooked up the vacuum advance. Haven't got on it yet but it runs great around town.

Thanks for the help. I'll look at the cam specs and check out a replacement that might better match the carb and intake. Chevy recommends the Holley 670 for this motor,..... anybody have an opinion on that?

Thanks again.

I think the Holley 670 cfm is a Street Avenger carb , I had one of those and didn't care for it , couldn't get to run right. I would try a Edlebrock preformer intake and an Edleborck 600 cfm carb with an electric choke.
