2k primer on bare metal

hey guys,

i have stripped my car to bare metel, is it essential for me to use an epoxy primer first then use my 2k primer ontop. i was just wondering if i could just use the 2k urathane primer by itself. from what i have read it seems like you need to use epoxy on bare metal, but can i get away with using urathane primer?

It will be alright.

What will help is the very last minute before spraying the primer is going over the metal with a 180 or 80 on a DA and washing with wax and grease remover and as soon as dry spraying.

Barry, I have found urethane primes just don't have a very good adhesion to bare metal. When I first started using an etch primer I just couldn't believe the difference. You could see as plain as day on a feather edge to bare metal how the adhesion had improved ten fold. Was this my imagination, were there other factors I am missing? Without it you could see those super clean edges on the sand scratches like it had pulled off the metal at the bottom.

Of course sense exchanging thoughts with you I now recommend epoxy instead of the etch. But with the low cost of epoxy primer (compared to possible loss of adhesion it is a deal) I can't see not using it first over the bare metal.

I agree whole heartedly with you and we have covered this a 1000 times of best prep for bare metal.
Of course 2K primer is not the best way to go but too answer his question yes it will work and I can only assume he read previous posts to know he is short cutting.

I also use urethane primer for just about everything but I always
use an etch primer first on bare metal.
Every brand of urethane I've used says to use an etch primer first
for bare metal. It's just not worth the risk going against the mfg.
recomendations. Don't do it. there's to much at risk.

You can put urethane primer over bare metal but it will be a gamble IMO, hell for decades people were applying laquer primer over bare metal. I wouldn't risk it though, spraying a couple coats of epoxy first is my preferred way, some people like self etch. The only time you'll see some urethane hit bare metal in my shop is if there is a minor cut through not large enough to worry about. Polyester primers are designed to be applied directly to bare metal but I still use epoxy under them. One thing to keep in mind though if you ever get any corrosion in an area where the urethane has been applied to direct steel- the rust will spread really fast under that primer because adhesion and water resistance won't be very good. I have sprayed urethane primer over bare metal and haven't had any problems. I just use a good metal etcher and DA the bare metal with 120 or 180 so it will get a tooth. I haven't had a problem with anything I have painted yet, but I would recommend doing it the proper way.
