3.00 or 3.25 ford 9 inch?

Need help deciding between these two ratios? Would there be much of a difference between the two? The tires will be 28" tall. The motor is built primarily for torque in the low to midrange. Motor is 454 .030 over 9:0 compression weiand 174 supercharger 1 3/4 headers XR264HR cam. Transmission is an Autogear M22W with 2.56 first gear. This will be in an 81 malibu that weighs in the neighborhood of 3,500 to 3,600lbs. I'm thinking one of these ratios cause the rearend isn't tubbed or anything and i would like to take advantage of all the torque so i narrowed it down to these two ratios, Thanks.

Very minute difference between the two, almost not worth taking about really.

3.25 out of the two you have decided on, But if it was me i would go with a set of 3.73 or maybe 3.42. These would be my picks. JMO And Vince is right not enough difference in the 3.00 and 3.25 to really matter.

Thanks guys i think ill go with the 3.25 gears. I just don't wanna go too low and have the tires go up in smoke every time i hit the gas. I don't have the money or skill to tub the rear.

hey turchiac, your post said you were putting a 454 into a malibu. I'm putting one in my pontiac safari, same platform G-body, I was wondering what intake and carb you used..and if you had any hood clearence problems.

Yeah im putting it in with the supercharger now so ill definitely need a big cowl, but i used to have a 454 in another malibu with an edelbrock rpm air gap intake and a 750 edelbrock carb with a decent sized air filter i believe it was 2 1/2" to 3" and i used a 2 1/2" harwood bolt on cowl hood and it just fit. If you used a non air gap manifold and a smaller air filter im sure you could sneak it under a stock hood.

If I was you, I would go with a 3:50. I had a 3:70 mated to a 700R4 and with the tires I have on the rear the RPM at 70 in OD was about 2500. The rear axle was from Currie and it was making noise so I replaced the gear set with a 3:50 and I am much happier with the highway RPM.
