$ 3.00 gas + vs .05 pop cans
Everyone knows times are tuff with gas prices, fuel prices and everything else. But it just amazes me there are people that drive down the shoulder of the road, stop and pickup five cent pop cans. I guess some one could say they are keeping things pickup, however 20 cans @ $1.00 60 @ $3.00 I guess sometime I need to stop and ask them how much are they really spending to pickup that .05 can , maybe thats their entertainment or maybe I'm missing something .Oh Well

I did that years ago when I was laid off just to kill the boredom. I knew all the back roads the kid's partied on and only worked those. I found enough empties to more than pay for my gas, of course it was less than a buck a gallon then but the price of aluminum wasn't as high either. The real payoff was the full 12 packs and cases tossed out because there was a car coming and they thought it was a cop, you wouldn't believe how often I found those and more often a full one at the bottom of a sack full of empties. Since it was in March they were usually still cold.

There is a woman that picks up cans up and down the road that I live on. I talked to her one day when she blocked my south driveway. She told me she was picking up cans to get enough money to feed her cats. I got the impression from talking to her that she was not quite playing with a full deck.
I probably have enough cans to fill my livestock trailer. One of these days I am going to back it up to the shed and take them to the redemption center. I haven't been picking them up along the road but they are just a pain to take back so I wait until it is worth an extra trip to town. The last time I took back cans I had $116.00 worth. |

we get 10 cents each in michigan, and I'm still never in a hurry to take them back.

There seems to be someone in every town that does this....It serves a dual purpose.....they make extra money and the place is cleaned up. At least these people are willing to put out a bit of work for their money........unlike some people who want everything given to them.

Obviously the people are finding more than 1 a minute. I have noticed for about 3 months now, that there is a older aged Asian man that comes by on trash night but only on recycling weeks (in our city recycling goes out every other week) Hes gets all the bottles and cans. I think he must live close, as I have only seen him carrying one or two bags at atime. Also he looks pretty well off, I wouldnt describe him as a whino, or homeless, but I bet the cash helps his retirement. we have a recycling center at our grocery store a few blocks away...

I don't burn gas to get my cans. A buddy of mine calls me like 3 times a week to come and fix something he messes up working on. Like the distributor that "walked" out past an untighted clamp. I take his cans about ever 3-4 weeks. 3 bags crushed and I just put them in $1 sealed steel 55 gallon drums in my basement. Last time I took cans, I had 7 barrels at 35 lbs each @ $.50 /lb. It adds up. It's how I bought my parts washer, and a "new" project trailer. Extra funding in my book. In a while, Chet. |

At work we have aluminum bars that hold materials on the skids together....A couple of the guys collect them up and sell them to recyclers.....Make good money from them.

I use to ride my bike through he country in the spring and pick them up. Good exercise and I get paid for it. Lots of cans after all winter. I still collect cans at work and people even call me to take them. That's how I get some of the money to buy car parts. I usually take them in when I get enough for at least a hundred dollars. It may take longer but it's like picking up free money. I'm not proud I pick up pennies all the time. I've got lots in a coffee can. That's more car parts or an evening out for dinner and a movie. Must come my conservative poor background and waist not want not attitude that was instilled in me. Hmmmm... now I need more cans to pay for a shrink to see why I do this pop can thing.
