3.42 vs 4.56 and gear vendor o/d
my current setup is a 454 th400 4.56 rear gears, help me decide if overdrive is needed for my app,3/4 ton 84 chevy pickup .with my gears now im runnin about 3100 rpm at 65 mph ,if i swap out to 3.42 s my rpm at 65 mph will drop to around 2300 rpm ,but if i keep the 4.56 s and add a gear vendor overdrive ill be at 2400rpm at 65 mph ,i like the 3.42s better lower rpm and more money in my pocket.but is there something else about having overdrive besides the drop in rpms?my truck will be used to tow my trailer and to be driven to work some time.all replies appreciated thanx

With a Gear Vendors unit you can turn that 3 speed trans into a 6 speed. The unit can be used to split gears for less rpm drop between gears.
There are examples on their site, scroll down the page about a third of the way: http://www.gearvendors.com/hrgm3s.html |
