3-5 window coupe

Which windows are you counting when you say 3 window coupe or 5 window coupe ?

I know which is which but don't know WHY we call them 3 or 5 window coupes.

Thanks

Side and rear. A three window has glass in each of the doors and the back. A five window has that plus small windows behind the doors on the side for a total of 5.

Three window coupes have 2 door glasses and a back glass, thus 3-window.
Five window coupes have 2 door glasses, 2 quarter glasses, and a back glass, thus 5-window.
On vehicles with vent windows, the vent windows are not counted separately but included with the door glasses. Also, split back glasses on cars are counted as one.

I own the 3W ... and the Roadster shown ... and owned a 5W ...
never had a phaeton

In 1932, Ford also made
Tudors
Fordors
Cabriolets
Sport Coupes
B-400's
Sedan Deliveries
plus commercial vehicles

I have not had a Sedan Delivery ... ( only 400 made )
I passed on a B-400 ...( just does not do it for me )

Evidently, since all cars had windshields regardless of coupe, sedan, roadster, etc...it was thought to be un-necessary to count the windshield when specifying the number of windows on a coupe.
