3 speed w/overdrive for my flathead
 
I want a 3 speed manual tranny for me flathead as yall know but can i get one with overdrive, or even a 4speed.

Three speed with overdrive was an available option beginning in 49, I think. Finding one with the controls will be a bit of a challenge. They are controlled with a cable to manually select and deselect and a solenoid to control. Those 6 volt systems were not the most reliable, but 12 volt models can be used with ingenuity.

Is it going to be floor or column shift? If floor, you can find a 1974 up Toploader 4/S O/D.

If your flathead is a 1948, or older, I believe some 36 to 41 Lincolns had overdrive. And, if your flathead is 1948, or older, get yourself a 3 speed floor shift ford tranny, then take all the gears from a manual shift 36 to 41 (V-12) Lincoln.

These gears - the cluster gear is 26 tooth - will all fit your ford box and you will have a tranny so strong it will crush a rock crusher.

After 1949, overdive was pretty common.

A good one for that would be the 3 spd OD used in Ford Pickups and some cars like the Maverick, in the 70's and 80's. It was a modified version of the Ford Toploader 4 speed. It comes in two styles, external and internal linkage, as well as both steel and aluminum casings. What they did was to convert 3rd gear in the 4 speed into an overdrive, and then flip the shift linkage for 3-4 upside down. These are a pretty good transmission, and will stand up to a lot of abuse. They do use a floor shifter, BTW.
You will need an adaptor plate, as it wont bolt up to your stock bellhousing. The shift into overdrive is done manually, there are no electric or vacuum controls on the OD.

If you don't mind some Chevy stuff to make your Ford tough you could look at the 5 speed from the V6 S10 pickups. It can easily handle the torque of the flathead, is cheap and available, has synchros and there are several places to get the trans adaptor. Just a thought.
