3-wire alternator upgrade

I'm upgrading my old externally regulated alternator to a new 3-wire unit and would like to know what to do with the wires that are connected to the old regulator. I've read that I should splice #1 to #3 and #2 to #4, but what do I do with the ends of the wires that were hooked up to the old alternator ( besides the Bat & ground wires)?

It's a 67 Chevy C-10.
What I've done is connect the #1 terminal wire to the # 4 wire on the old voltage regulator which goes to the ignition switch and fired that puppy up. The alternator charges and the motor shuts off when I turn the key to off.

New to the board. Love the wealth of info but cannot find exactly what I am looking for. This post was as close as it gets, but I have a 3 wire externally regulated alternator. Any ideas or leads as to how I hook that bad boy up?

Thanks in advance. And allthough I didnt know him RIP DocVette, you seemed like a very knowledgable man. I wish I could have picked your extensive electrical brain before god decided to take you.

Beau

Ohhh 1962 Impala, 327, OG powerglide. Allready had the 3 wire external regulated alternator on it, but I just replaced it because someone said it was bad. Turns out it is something else since the car still dies if I drive across town and turn it off. If I let it sit for a hour or two it turns right back on, drive it 15 minutes stop to cash a check come out dead. Need any further info to help me along my path please let me know.
