Post 302 to 351

I have a 1970 302 Windsor engine and I want to change to a 351 Windsor, I have a 1974 351 Windsor block but it doesn’t have a timing cover or harmonic balancer. Can I use the timing cover and balancer from the 302 on the 351? Seems like I should be able to use them but its better to ask someone who knows than take a chance.

Unfortunately, no. The timing cover fits but the oil pan sealing surface has a smaller radius than the 351, so won't seal properly. The harmonic balancer is where Ford puts the balance weight for the engines (external balance) and the 351 has a heavier rotating assembly.

I have used the timing cover numerous times and there was never a problem. It is not the weight of the assy but the balance, you will have to use a 351 balancer. Also when you get the balancer try for the pulleys as the early ones are 3 hole and the later ones are 4 hole.

Thanks guys for the information, seems like it is unanimous that the balancer won’t work, but a little hazy about the cover.

the cover will work, i've done it before.

I thought that the balancer would work. 351s have a 28 ounce balance and so do early 302s. (not after 82) Isn't that all that matters?????
