now looking at a car i just bought how can u tell the difference between a 302 and a 351w because they are the same blocks im confused to tell and if u just looked at a engine sitting there (a 351) how can u tell whether its a cleveland, a modified or a windsor????

The fact is they are not. The 351w has a deck height about 1 inch taller than the 302/289. Another "quick" way to tell is the 302 intake manifold is aproximatlly 7 1/2 inches wide, while the 351w is 9 1/2 wide. The clevland looks a lot like a 460 if it is a fairly late model and has factory valve covers. The "M" moter can usually be identified by numerous oil leaks and sludge and grease everywhere.
