Finally finished creating a complete setup for ford small blocks which allows 1 coil per cylinder. Thought I would post some photos and see what you guys think. I CNC cut a miniature distributor from a block of 6061 aluminum to use as a cam sensor and created a ford 4 bolt reluctor for the front crank pulley. Everything for timing is completely programmable and can even use an optional map sensor for vac. advance or boost. Hope to have a complete system to sell by middle of the year.
Looks great - but you didn't really address the one nasty weakness of the SB (or BB) Ford engines. You are still operating the oil pump via the gear drives on the camshaft and distributor shaft along with a flimsy piece of hex stock. Fix that dinky 1/4(302) or 5/16(351W) inch hex and it's probably going to be an A+ system. A dry sump will fix that but not everyone can get into that added cost and complexity.
If this seems to be a 'dump' on your efforts, it isn't meant to be. It's just little food for some more thought.
There probably isnt a cost effective way to get around the oil pump drive. This ignition system will run without the cam sensor, its only used as a way to help tell the computer which bank its on, all the critical timing is done by the crank reluctor. Another advantage is that your dropping your coil load by 8 times, so you have much more accurate timing at higher rpm.
96+ 5.0 explorers had a cam sensor/ oil pump drive real similar to what was posted above. Might sit a little taller. They were known for starting to squeak when the bushing dried up so most parts stores sell one for $100 or less with the cam sensor too. Ford called it a cam sensor synchronizer. There may be a cheap way to modify it for a 351s larger pump drive. If you occasionally squirt a few drops of oil into the top they'll never dry out, you could do that once every 5-10k miles. The sensor comes off the top with two 5.5mm bolts.
You'd still have the oil pump drive of course but it'd be easier for someone with out the machining equipment or skills.
A computer is not require. The MSD 6010 box comes with 5 pills, each with different advance curves. If you have a computer then you don't use the pills and custom program it, if you don't have a computer then simply insert one of the 5 pills for an advance curve.
