How long since the cooling system has been flushed..had that issue and needed to have the radiator cleaned and flushed as well as the engine..those can build up deposits in the cooling system which will cause your difficulty..

You said the temp gauge is reading normal.....How do you know the engine is overheating?...Is it spitting water out, boiling over?..or is it just running bad after 20 minutes?

Check fuel pressure at the carb inlet. Adjust for max 5 psi. Re-set float to specs.

If the pump is making noise it could have air in the system. Also could be cavitation. A block in the system will cause this. A cooling system not bled properly can cause "hot spots" near the head.

Some of the new thermostats dont have the little piddle valve like they had before. It's a small hole with a metal inset that allows water to pass even if the thermostat is closed. If the thermostat lacks this, you can drill a 1/8" hole on the flat part.
