302 Buildup

I'm thinking about building a 302 chevy. I have a 350 4 bolt block, some 350 pistons and a 283 crank. I can get some Lunati 6.200 in rods for 250 bucks from summit. Now how do I get the 283 crank into the 350 block? Does anyone make over size bearings?

302 SBC build.

Well, I've never done one but Clevite #MS-1110H or King Bearing # CR 867HP is what you're looking for. Also, unless my math is wrong, your pistons are going to stick out of the hole .235; you can take .020 off that figure if you have rebuilder type pistons (but why?). You may get by with a 6" rod and a thick head gasket and/or milling the tops of the pistons; then you have to check for valve clearence. I don't know why the piston manufacturers have'nt just made a piston for a 3" stroke, 5.7" rod, no dome application yet. Seems everyone wants to do this and then use Vortec heads. Speed Pro, are you listening?

Thanks for the bearing info! You were right about the pistons hanging out .020 so I took another look at some rods and found some at 6.125 now I'm the other way at .055 under. How much compression will that cost me?

taken from BeckRacing website:

Quote:
Chevy 302: Chevy 327 or 350 block with 4.0" bore, and 3.0" stroke. Must use Caprice 5.94" connecting rods. Any KB piston with a 1.561" compression height can be utilized. This is not an original equipment Chevy 302.

302 Build

Steveo55, Here's the way to figure out what you need: First of all stock deck height on a SBC=9.025. Then take 1/2 of 3" stroke, 1.500"+rod lenth+pin height/compression height. Let's do the last posters suggestion as an example: 1.500" (1/2 3" stroke)+5.94"(Caprice rods)+1.561(compression height of 350 piston)=9.001; so, 9.025-9.001=.-024 IN THE HOLE. Can you see how you're still way above deck at even a 6.125"rod? Still need a shorter rod or less compression height. Bet those 5.94" rods are hard to find and then they're going to be large journal and nobody makes thicker rod bearing to put large journal rods on small journal cranks. You could do it with all the "latest" design blocks/rods/cranks, but the 265 crank is a cast crank; not talking about the 55'57' 265. Nothing's easy, that's why I said the piston manufacturers should just do a run of flat top 2 valve relief pistons for 3" stroke and 5.7" rod in maybe only one oversize to see how it sells ( like .030 over ). Everyone seems hung up on this 302 idea for some reason.

302 Buildup

Thanks junior stocker....I thought this would be a simple thing to do. I got some parts laying around...I think I'll a 302...cool! Did check on those Caprice rods and they are hard to find...With a 350 block and my forged steel 283 3.00" stroke crank with over sized bearings, I'd have to use the 283 small journal rods. I guess it's time to find some pistons...I don't give up easy...Thanks for everyones help!!!!!! Keep ya all posted!
UPDATE: Pistons found! Speed pro PT# TRW2210AF30, KB & SRP also make them. Now let me see if they'll work.
