Red face 302 gear drive

I am building a 302 for a 77 mustang cobra and am using an Edelbrock 7892 gear drive timing set.But have ran into a problem with the timing cover. The timing cover will not go on all the way because of a ridge cast into the back side of the cover right above the oil seal for the vibration damper, this ridge hits the idler gear and won't allow the cover to go against the block.Does anyone know can I just cut out that ridge and use the stock cover or does someone make an aftermarket cover to work on this? The ridge looks like it diverts oil is all. Thanks Harley

I believe what you are going to have to do is find an early timing cover (pre-1975) as FORD did away with the oil slinger on the crakshaft snout and went to the drip method. Of course, you will have to add the slinger to keep the gears lubricated. I wouldn't try to modify what you have but just swap out. Make sure the ridge is not present in the replacement cover and has provision for the dipstick tube (if yours goes into the front cover-you might have to drill this).

Seems like EDELBROCK would have warned you about this.

Hope this helps you out.
