302 head porting
how much hump can you safely in the exhast on 78 302 heads ?

It looks like you want to "build on a budget" the '78 302 heads are not really a good choice but this will give you the info to start with:Porting Stock Cylinder Heads - Ford E7TE Heads | FordMuscle.com best bet would be something like these:1966 66 FORD 289 CYLINDER HEADS PAIR 1965-66 289 heads have a smaller combustion chamber for more compression,they use adjustable rocker arms and there are no humps this will give you some extra info:Ford Small Block Cylinder Heads, Valves and Valvetrain read the section on 289 heads which are very similar to the 289 HI-PO's,you should buy this book to educate yourself further.

casting quality
You can feel inside the ports and sometimes casting core mold mis- match will leave a ridge you can feel. Just removing those and smoothing the runners can make a difference. also a lot the old Ford carbs had a mold misalignment, the carb bores can be carefully cleaned up.
