302 performance (chevy eater)

OK,
I am going to start this because of some interest in the 302 ho motors.
Let me know what info you need and I will help you make a chevy eater out of that little motor!

I think he`s referring to 302 High Output ford engines. Let me say to start with, the term "HO" is misleading, compared to Old school standards, there`s nothing high output about them. It`s really a smog engine with a few more horses than a standard 302. You can do the basic mods to it, heads, cam, intake, carb, ignition, headers, gears, etc. and it`ll respond well, or you can stroke it to make it a 347. I`m not a Ford guy, and I don`t like 302`s, there short stroke makes more of a high revver than a low end torque engine. I like the 351 windsor, there just as dependable, they have a longer stroke, and I`ve seen one with minor mods almost hang with a stock 400 small block chevy.
But if the guy with the 400 had knew what he was doing, the fellow in the ford would have gotten his doors blown off.

get some good AFR 165cc heads, a nice cam with some 1.7 rockers, headers, good intake (carbed or EFI?), and you should be able to hit the ~350hp range. Most of the 5.0 boys like to run superchargers - that's the best way with the 'small' displacement of the 302. 331 or 347 stroker would be the way to go - but as the others said, a stroked 351 is even better

Car Craft had a nice 5.0L buildup based on a stock HO engine
http://carcraft.com/techarticles/116_0307_ford/

dunno how accurate the dyno numbers were - but hey, it would be a nice combo in a Falcon

Nice to see someone reads all the articles, not just the chevy ones.
And I have yet to see a chevy with the same mods keep up with my 302 (FORD).
I use to have nothing but chevys, but now I have seen the light! (the win light that is) and have nothing but fords...

Hmm, you ask us what mods you can do to it so it`ll eat chevy`s, now you claim you already have one that no chevy can keep up with. Why do you need more mods if no chevy can keep up with you? I smell a kid, a dreaming kid at that.

i a had a lot of 350 chevys.a s10 truck with a 427 one time also..... no i have a 347 motor.in my stang ..it will run with the best 350 chevy out there...ford have bad heads..so the heads are the biggest thing to do...on a regular o 302 motor..it is no problem to get some afr heads and pick up 50-75 hp more..i my self have a all forged eagle 347 motor..with a set of worked over protop line 200cc runner heads... a street soild roller .619 lift..a 750 holley and intake...im not the fastest car at thre track..but for me to drive it the 35 miles there and back run what it does..hell im a happy man right now....the fords have really came back to earth the last few years...i would have donre a 408...but i got a killer deal on this motor..even the 351 poked to a 408 is one mean motor..to me a nice built 347 motor..even at over 50ci less than a 400 chevy will run with that 400...and a 408 ford will run and hide from a 400 chevy...i have fun telling people that my motor is a 289..causze you can not tell the difference in a 289-302 -331-347...of course the 331-347 motor cost more..i paid 1300.00 for the kit..

I hated going into parts stores and asking for parts to my 302 cid camaro and getting asked why I had a ford motor in it. I would ask for another part person that actually knew something.

I absolutely hate fords, I can't stand them. I have chevy orange blood. That said and out of the way....

My father in law had this 1988 LTD Crown Victoria LX. I drove it a time or 3. When he passed, I told my wife that it was one ford I would not mind owning. It was garage kept, maintained like a swiss watch. (father in law was a watch maker) he had the receipts from when he bought the air fresheners to hang on the mirror.

Needless to say I now posses this car. What made it even sweeter was when I opened the hood and saw the 5.0 EFI motor. from a dead stop it is a tire frier. From a roll, a few Z28's and muskrats were truly supprised as how it hangs in there. 2 tons once moving gains speed quickly. I call it my LAND YACHT. Having served on an air craft carrier, I some times think I could land and launch jets on the hood.

I had it dyno'd at 131 hp and about 220 tq. Since then I have put new cat's, the police dual kit, accel coil, cap, rotor, wires, msd6 and put synthetics in the engine and axle. The motor leaks at the valve covers.

Is there any way to remove the passenger valve cover with out removing the upper intake section?

I had the tranny rebuilt at a shop run by a local drag racer. I opted for the street RV shift setup. Nice and smooth, but it actually barked going into second when I stood on the loud pedal.

I now have several EFI manuals that I found links to on this site. I have plans on installing the intake spacer since I gotta pull it anyway. I have been prowling this board looking for EFI info.

I saw where there was going to be a 302 ford performance thread and asked my self this question.

Will this be full of questions on how to do it or will those of us seeking information be able to get input from those that have done it?

i like chevy and ford..dodge just smells funny...take the 1979-93 mustang..ford took the bullet pfoof 302 v8...put a 5 speed stick in front of a huge 8.8 rear ..they had the best of 3 things...tough 302 a t5 and the 8.8..together..they made the hot rod world stand on its end...then there is the 1982-93 camaro...with the correct motor..the 350 and a t5 also..but a weak 7.5 rear..they where pretty dang mean...so both have the good and nither really had a bad thing against them..and dodge still stink
