305 Balancer on 350 ? timing marks off the chart

If a guy has a 305 Balancer on a 350 engine
with 350 timing marks
when we time it the marks move toward water pump
the timing marks for a 305 are read from top of water pump right
what the heck is going on
has anyone ever seen or done this

If you are using a different balancer, you should always check for TDC on it. ....Heck, I even have found that the stock balancer mark has been out a bit.

There are a lot of different balancers. I went through the same process. Some were timed TDC from the top below the water pump and others from the side. You will find that it will be different even with same sized balancers. You have several options, either change the TDC mark yourself on the balancer and relocate or you can find the correct balancer.

In any case, as mentioned, it's ALWAYS a good idea to double check TDC with your balancer. Finding the right style balancer is simple by checking the spline groove to TDC cut.

Good luck

Are you talking about a spark plug stop or head-off stop? for plug stop, bought mine from jegs. if you cant find it ill search for it and link it but should be easy to search. plug stop you have to be very careful with though, and turning the engine backwards is a pain cuz you cant use the balancer bolt. keep that in mind

Haha tell me about it. I just tore my engine apart and re-assembled it with the same parts and STILL ran into complications. Sometimes it's a never ending battle, but it's always worth it in the end if you do the job right.

The piston stop method works fine, put the stop in and rotate clockwise by hand till she stops then make a mark, rotate counterclockwise till she stops and make another mark, TDC will be exactly between the two marks. Pull all your spark plugs out so she turns easily. Bob

The 305 timing is read from the top of the water pump. 350 is where you were trying to check it from. If memory serves me, you would wind up with somehting around 60° at the 350 mark. Get a 350 damper and it will be a better damper than the 305.
