We're right back to what heads (and thus what CR) are you going to use? What gear ratio and stall speed?

If it's stock heads (should be 58cc not 68cc), I would NOT run anything any 'beefier' than a Comp 262 in your C-truck. Forget about the idle sound, unless that's ALL you want and to drive a pig otherwise.

ok, no idle isnt what i am aiming for, just would like a noticeable change. The heads are stock but have heavy springs on them and the pistons are flats, it was estimated that it would be close to a 10:1 cr.

If the xe262 is the way to go then ill do that, i was just ready about how the 270h was an older design and liked higher cr, thats why i was leaning towards that grind. Thanks for the input.

stall is stock, well a v6 stock stall and gears are stock but sorry no idea what they are..ill have to jack the truck up to determine that.

your estimated 10:1 is based on what? Often times people have a given compression ratio based on the mood they are in that day...

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but the rpm rating is based on a 350 build. So the rpm range in a 305 will be more like 2,300-6,300. You would need at least a 2,500 stall so it's not a dog down low.

If you take a look at that build link I posted, you'll see that the XE268H cam they used made best power at 6,100 rpm.

flat top pistons are being put in, so around 9:5:1.

and thanks for the heads up on the rpm range, ill take a look at that.

not trying to bash...but to get good power out of this motor is gonna need compression. Not saying its not possible, 305 Sprint cars out here get around 600+ hp from thier 305's...but they have some work done to them...A LOT of work...

The "262" was ONLY a "yardstick" to go by. I don't recommend cams, so use it as a guideline of sorts, and make your selection yourself. That way, you are the one who gets the blame if it sucks OR who is the hero if it doesn't.

I think ill try the xtreme 4x4 262 cam, it seems like the right direction for me, its definitely got the torque i need.

I stroked a 305 that runs stronger than a stock 350, half the "built" ones. .038" quench, 882 heads, zero deck with -.020" off the 882s port window matched and opened up, 1.88/1.6 ex. <<hard to find truck heads started out 1.72/1.50s. Cut the intake surface -.022" each. forged flat tops, close balance work .422/.444 lift 1.6 rockers. Was a surprise even to me. Built it for fuel mileage on half ton that often pulls a heavy dump trailer... truck and got 18 mpg/15 heavily loaded, gross weight loaded at the construction dump scales 13,000+. Didn't expect it to run like it does..

I can't imagine duplicating the mileage again but I'd like to build one for myself. Practical having something that will work cheap... and run too.

Most satisfying results of any small block I ever built. including 400 based stuff.
