I wonder how much horse power you might get switching from torker to dual plane?
If I was doing an elcheapo I would use the torker and maybe a ported spacer(4 hole with bullet nose) a low lift solid lifter cam and take advantage of the gears.
This is one of those times you follow fb88 and his back yard hot rodding.

Vinnie: FB88:

We agree I posted that already 4 ported spacer and solid cam every one must have read right by it! That would be the cheap combo That would work very well with the right carb or mods on his present carb. and a good timing curve with a basic shift kit home installed !!

I don't know how to build a 220hp engine.
If you want 220hp use the stock intake.

If you use the 305 HO heads with the damn Y exhaust crossover fill the damn thing with grout, plain old machine grout will work and you'll pick up power and economy.

Who is your post aimed at?

Actually a 305 that has 140, 150 hp stock jumping to 220 hp is a 70 hp gain on a small budget! That's a 45% gain!

That's something to brag about for a young builder and 500 dollars!

I guess it would be the OP, building a 305 on a budget... I didn't really plan on addressing it to one particular individual.

it's a low buck 305...
220hp is about it.. without pulling it down and blueprinting the whole works..
larger valves and high lift cam, valve hits the cyl wall..

I got 306hp at the wheels in my 5spd '85 t/a but that was alot of work, require super 94 gas.. rowdy cam that not play nice with an automatic.
corvette alum heads and the cyl walls notched for valve clearance..

what a r.p.i.t.a it was to get the ccc to work with it. and pass the sniffer.

You are talking about power under the curve, why? Its a build for cheap, and the only power to worry about is full power. When it comes to acceleration/gears/cheap all in one sentence, take the peak cheap power.

buying the dual plane would waste money,I agree with your post

I don't know why the 305 L30 Vortec heads haven't caught on? They flow real good unported- a **** load better than any other 305 head- and other than the need for a Vortec intake, SA rockers and centerbolt valve covers, it's a plug and play deal.

A mild cam and recurve the distributor, long tube 1-5/8" headers and dual exhaust, will have you all over 300 HP and good torque w/o needing to spin it to the moon.

This can be done for $500, the headers and exhaust system can be reused, there's never a problem reselling a Vortec intake. In fact, the entire 305 could be sold at a profit.
