A mild cam and recurve the distributor, long tube 1-5/8" headers and dual exhaust, will have you all over 300 HP and good torque w/o needing to spin it to the moon.

This can be done for $500, the headers and exhaust system can be reused, there's never a problem reselling a Vortec intake. In fact, the entire 305 could be sold at a profit.
Good post and good way to hop up a 305 on a budget.

The "059" L-30 305 vortec heads get overshadowed by the L-31 350 heads for sure. but on this build and budget thye can work well.
They also can be improved by hand porting and shaving the decks for compression on a 305. Especially if it has a dished piston.
You'd want to get them down to around 51cc and use a shim gasket on a
dished pistoned 305.
Now it will have enough flow and compression to take and use a bit of a cam.
Keep the cam torquey. It is easy to get carried away with cam choice on a 305.
A Small CID engine is very sensitive to camshaft selection. The cam choice will make or break it.
Converter and gears are critical. Getting the compression ratio up is most critical.
If your 305 had dished pistons you need to pay attention to this.

This can work very well.

They are basically 1996-up truck heads. Also used on some SUVs. Unlike the L31 5.7L Vortec head, the L30 305 head doesn't seem to be available new from Scoggins-Dickey, etc. (GM parts dealers), although I might not have been looking in the right place.

A little info on them is here.

The following list is for L31 5.7L head donor vehicles. But some/all of the same vehicles may have been available w/the L30 305:

1996-2002 Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana full-size vans
1996-1999 Chevrolet/GMC C/K full-size trucks
1996-1999 Chevrolet Suburban/GMC Suburban full-size long wheelbase SUVs
1996-1999 Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon full-size short wheelbase SUVs

I found a pair of 059 L30 BARE heads. Now I have never built a cylinder head before. Is there a manual or can someone give me step by step instructions on how to rebuild a head.
Thanks
