305 build up on the cheap

With a stock bottom end what's the best upgrade I can make. This something to hold me over before the big block.

how much are you looking to spend? on the cheap- cam, headers, and port and mill the heads. With plenty of money- cam, headers, new heads, new intake, and a new carb.

Ill add: Clutch fan or scrap yard electric do away with fan on pump, Low ohm plug wires Like 40 ohm, non resistor plugs, shorty headers increase top end long tube increase bottom end if primary tubes are the same Dia. , large tube headers decrease exhaust velocity and savaging at lower rpms, smaller tube increase velocity and help scavenging at lower rpms to a point of too small ! smaller diameter tires increase bottom end ratio tall tires increase top speed, stay away from air gap intakes if you have cold climate, dual planes help low rpm and bottom end open plenum better for top end high rpm, solid cam is a real good choice over hyd., if you go hyd. cam use anti pump up lifters 0 to .002 lash ( make sure they have the heavy lock ring don't get them with the snap clips) There are a lot more little tricks to get performance! re curve Dist. adjustable vacuum advance, if open headers a collector of about 18 inches makes a big difference over dumping right out of the header etc

I have no idea what cam is in but lets say stock and stock internals. When i mean cheap, I mean junkyard vortec heads and new valve train and a new intake. I have a torker single plane( not my choice it was on when i bought the car).

lets say $500,I have to change that was thee old single days, I'm now married w/ 2 kids, lol.
Achieving something better, my expectations out of a 305 is less desirable compared to my future big block.
Just doing this for the experience, also I say im shy under 200hp now. All bolts on are installed, intake, headers, msd parts in hei ignition and edelbrock 600cfm carb E choke.

I'd stick with 305 heads..
crossfire 305/montySS heads if you can find a set.. or reuse yours

the vortec heads are 64cc your 305 is 58 or less..
you'll loose compression adding vortecs,
get a dualplane intake, junk yard cheap 84-86 f-body or monty alum factory carb intake..
get a none computer q-jet and rebuild it..
add cam.. if rebuilding heads, mill it a little
you'll get 290 ft lb's 220hp

if done right(cam choice)
remember the intake bolt angles changed in 86-87 and you didn't list what year your 305 is.. keep that in mind when on the junkyard crawl
the crossfire/ss heads 50 bucks at a all you can carry w-end
intake too, if you eat your wheaties
carb, 25-45+ rebuild kit (23.00 rock auto) float 7 bucks
cam and lifters 200+
mill heads 75.00 ish
gaskets figure 100.00+

you can add a 4 hole spacer under the carb. to help the bottom end. if you run a Holley say 600 vacuum secondary you can tune it with a lighter or stiffer diaphragm spring to tune when the secondary's open. Run a 185 thermostat keeping it at optimum temp( best performance). The plug wires if you get low ohm can give you a horse power increase 40 or 25 ohm up to 10 horse over High ohm sets, it wont effect your car radios but peoples T.V.s and home radios Will will be affected! low octane will probably be a better choice then mid or premium with your compression. You can advance or retard the cam with a stepped wood-ruff key or get a 3 key way gear set. A large capacity oil filter like for trucks will give you an extra qt. of oil and add a little cooling benefit! I have seen and added a 50 cc pump to the primary (with a carb spacer it will fit even on a stock intake) and a very light spring to the secondary diaphragm and an actuating cam that I hand filed to tune the squirt. These other guys may have many more little tricks and some old farts like me may have old drag cheats from stock class they would share! But like Vinnie said a small nitrous kit.

Jester

Just read your going with a cam kit! Check to see if the new cam is ground advanced!
