hello all, i have a question i need with a cam choice,,i have 83 305 chevy ,edelbrock street master intake,holley carb, engine has an rv cam in it now, has a turbo 350 ,3.42 gears in a 85 s10 2 wheel drive blazer, im looking for a cam with "choppy" or lumpy idle, something similar to a muther thumper cam sound, but im told the muther cam is way to big for my stock little engine,im not looking for any really radical, this is a everyday cruiser, not a weekend drag racer or anything like that,,,,,,,,,just need some ideas from you all,thanks again

try comp cams extreme 4x4 cam shafts they have 4 different levels from milde to wild they have good idle choppy but not to choppy and tons of torque

Any of the cams that will give you the choppy racy idle (thumpr cam included) will require a 3500-4000 stall and big gears when used in a 305CID motor. The bigger the tires the more gear needed.
Big cams in small CID motors need to rev (gears) and do not like a stock torque converter.
Any 305 with a cam will not get busy until 3000+ rpm.

Needs a valve spring swap for max performance.
get a "3500 stall" (rated) and get some gears 4.10+. It wil go like hell and sound bad just like you want.

Ditch the old obsolete intake manifold and get a edelbrock performer rpm dual plane.
The distributor will need to be recurved. A stock distributor timing curve will not work well
with this type of cam. The recurve is not hard to do. Search my posts.

this is how you make these rough idle cams work on the street. If you follow this outline you will get the sound you want

A typical high stall converter rated at 3500 stall will give you a real 3000 ish stall when behind a 305CID motor.
A "4000 stall" will give a real 3500 stall when behind a 305. Getting the converter stall speed right is critical.
A "4000 stall" is not too much. A typical tight 10" "3000 stall" or 11" "2800 stall" will come up short
when used behind a 305.

smaller engine ='s less torque output ='s less actual converter stall speed. Some of the old S-10's with a 4 cylinder came with factory 4.10 gears. Thats the gear you want.

Your 305 heads will make a lot more power with judicious hand porting. dont be shy.
Now you got a 305 Blazer that sounds mean at idle and goes like it sounds.
A lot of fun on the street and you can still drive it to work.
