305 convo to 350

ive got a 81 chevy with a turbo 400 tranny and a 305 pushing it. Ive heard that its hard to make te 305 put out about 300hp and to keep it fairly reliable. I was wondering if it would make more sence to swap in a 350 and build that up. is this a simple convo or rather indepth. What kind of power could i expect from a 350 with a 4 barrel carb, headers, dual exahst. and ignition. also mabey a medium cam. i dont want to go to wild as it is my daily driver and i want to keep the engines entegrity and ability to run up milage. also with that kind of power is it possible to run reg pump gas?
what are some other internal mods i could do to the 350 later to bump up the hp a bit more

Make sure and get a late model 350. You want the roller cam and one piece seal.

A 400 would be an even better swap. You can make way more power than the 350 and still keep your idle quality. Keep your eyes open for a standard bore block.

305 fast??

[color=lightblue]Doc here

Jeeze, Ya ' Think??

I've always considered the 305 as:
  • training Wheels Fur a 350...
  • A 350 on an apprenticeship ....
  • A 265 on steroids ......
  • A 350 Clone experiment Gone terribly Wrong.....
  • A Stovebolt that got to Close To 3 mile Island....

    Well, Enough 305 Bashing... Actually They are pretty Good engines for what they are... and Volkswagons are great too...you'll eventually get there...

....get a Chev. crate motor. More power for less money than you'll ever get out of a 305. Your biggest problem will be deciding which one to get..... nice problem, huh??? Bill..

It is hard to estimate your hp with out knowing the engine and the cam. But by simply switching to a fresh 350 with some headers you will probably feel a difference depending on the condition of you engine now. Alot of those old trucks came with numerically low gears for highway driving. Rear ends are pretty common and cheap you may want to consider a gear ratio switch to increase your tourque at the rear wheels.
