I've decided to do a 305 head swap on my 355. 416 casting, pocket port, gasket match, 2.02/1.6 valves, chambers deshrouded, 64 cc. My question is, do I need screw in studs and guideplates? This is strictly a street car 3500 lbs., 355, 274ho6 cam, intake, headers, etc., 4.10's. Just after seat of pants excitement here, if I want to drag race, I'll get a race car. Thanks for suggestions.
I just finished all the machine work and portin gon my 416's yesterday, just need to assemble now.
First, you want 1.94/1.6 valces, not 2.02. 2.02 puts them too close to the wall.
I have screw in studs and guide plates on mine, BUT with that mild .450 lift you could just pin the studs and run them like that. I have all the equipment to tap them now so I will forever more run screw ins, but pinning them is adequate for that cam.
Make sure you spend plenty of time working on those 416's they can do quite well with some work, but it'll take more than just cleaning up the parting line.
Done right they have no problem beating box stock Vortec heads. Done half a55ed they will fall short to a lot of heads.
Well I went to the machine shop today and they had a set of 062 vortecs. They will do them up with proper springs and a little port job for less than I would have in the 305 heads.....I think I will get the vortecs!!

Shop around for an intake to fit the Vortec heads- it'd different than the older intakes (either of the older styles).
