305 heads
 
Will 1980-86 305 heads fit on a 1971 307 ? Casting Number 14014416 . Upper (aluminum) timing gear stripped. Bent vavles but did not damage pistons. Thanks!!

They sure will. GM shoulda been whipped for those aluminum/plastic timing gears!

Be aware that all the shredded plastic from the cam gear ends up clogging the oil pick up, so if you can remove the pan and clean the pick up screen real good or just replace the oil pump and pick up w/a new one. You don't need a high volume pump for a mild build, the standard volume pump is fine.

416's are excellent heads for a basically stock '71 307, if it still has the stock cam I'd slip a mild hydraulic cam like the Summit 1102 in it while you have it down to the shortblock. The '416 heads and an "RV" type cam really wake older 305's and 307's up without ruining them as daily drivers. There will never be a better time, all the hard part will already be done all you have to do beyond what you'll already have done is slide the old cam and lifters out and install the new then break in the cam for 20 minutes when you fire it back up. If you want a little bit of a lope go with the Summit 1103, it will still work with a stock converter and gears in a 307 but IMHO the 1102 makes a better driver, especially if it's a heavier vehicle like a pickup or Impala. Just sayin'........;)
