305 heads on 327

Is it possible to put 305 heads on my 1964 327?
It has no heads on it when i got it, but now someone offered me some heads.
The engine will go into a 62 impala and will only be used as a street/cruise engine.
What are the problems or limits I can face?

Thanks

Ronald

The heads will bolt on OK. The intake valves are a little smaller, but if you're looking at just cruising you probably wouldn't notice the difference. What pistons do you have...flattops, dished? The 305 heads will boost your compression because they're 58-60cc. A 327 with flattops and a 64cc heads would be about 9:1, so you'd be looking at something probably around 9:5 or so.

305 heads

Im doing a similar project right now. What casting are the 305 heads you have?? I've use the 416 castings from an SS monte before and it ran pretty good. I used them on a 350 but it shouldn't make that much difference, the bore is the same just a little shorter stroke. Anyway This time I'm gonna port my 416's and increase the valve size to 194/150. I'm actually starting the porting when i get home.

Hes right about the higher compression, but i think it may be a little higher than 9.5:1 but I'm not positive. Just know what i've been told about my set up. However, the valves in the 416 casting are actually bigger then the the old 76cc smogger heads. My 76's have like 174 or 176 intake i can't remember, I know there are different ones but alot of the non-performance 350's in trucks and stuff and the small valves like mine.

Anyway, yes it will work just fine. If i were you i'd look for some of the 416 casting heads. They are about the best 305 heads out there. Also talk to F'BIRD88 on here, Old bogie, and automotive breath on here. These guys are pretty knowledgable on this subject and they can definitely help you out. No matter what 305 head you use it would be worth your while to port match them and open the runners a little at the very least. In stock form they will choke an engine with a 4 inch bore, they are ok for a cruiser i guess but I wouldn't expect more than 5K rpm's out of them. I've never ported heads, and i dunno if you have or not, but if your interested, those guys i metioned before can definitely steer you in the right direction. Good luck
Danny

The pistons are flattops and the castingnr of the heads is 378450.
The ports of the heads match my intake exactly.
The intake is 327-300 1964 chevy with AFB carb.

They will fit and run just fine on your 327. Because of the small intake valve, keep your horsepower expectations modest. If you're going to install the heads stock, do not install a big cam expecting big rpm or horsepower. its not going to happen. The motor will have good torque and cruise nicely with a near stock cam and those heads.

If you want more horsepower these heads will need full porting and larger 1.94x 1.60" valves.

Thanks for all the answers.
I do not expect a lot of horsepower just a nice engine to cruise around.
I will use the original cam that came with the engine.
Can someone tell me what would be the best head gasket to use on this engine. There are a lot off different ones so witch one should be the best?(steel or not and why)
A lot off questions but this is the first v8 engine i am building and want to do it right.

hard to beat Felpro blue
but even inexpensive "rebuilder" gaskets should work fine for your purposes.

If the engine hasn`t been run in a long time then make sure you cycle it when you fire it back off just as if the engine were new. If not chances are the cam will go flat. If it`s a fresh rebuild I`d still recommend doing the same.
