305 heads on a 350?

As I discussed in another thread I have a 350 that I am rebuilding, I was told that my stock 350 heads were pretty much useless (3998991 heads)..

A buddy of mine has a complete engine that he pulled from his camaro, 305HO Tuned port injection... He says I can dump 200$ into those heads and that will be good enough for my mild street engine.

Trying to keep the costs low on this rebuild due to all the money I've spent restoring the truck, I figure in the end if I'm not happy I can all ways save up over time and just drop in a nice crate package..
But if I spend much more cash right now I myswell sign the divorce papers.

All I am planning for in the engine is a mild street engine..
The truck will be for show, not racing.. Though I do want a great sounding engine with some lope and be able to drive on the street without issues..

depending on the head castings and valve size there are some decent 305 heads out there. Do some porting to get the flow numbers up a bit and you shouldn't have any problems.

However they will increase your compression quite a bit. So plan on running premium gas at least.

The 305 HO TPI motor with centerbolt valve covers should have the "081" casting heads on it.
They are nominally 58cc with 1.84 x 1.50" valves.
With generous porting and larger 1.94x 1.60" valves and some chamber deshrouding around the new valves, they will give suprising good performance.
The chambers will end up slightly bigger when you are done. 60-62 ish cc.
Don't be shy on the porting. Drill and roll pin the rocker stud bosses.
If you are willing to spend the time and do the work required, you can make a pretty good low budget street performance head out of them.
Once you have all the hand porting etc done, you local machine shop can do the new valve job at reasonable cost.
400+ hp potential

Your cr will be higher than it is now but will not be excessive. 92 octane fuel.
use Champion RV8C or autolite #144 plugs.

Will you be using a high stall torque converter and high(er) rear gear ratio or stock stuff in your truck?

I rather think that by the time all is said and done, rebuilding a set of 305 heads, if you include doing a port job so they'll feed a 350 above 3500 RPM; install 350 size valves so the heads will again feed a 350 which requires taking the seats probably beyond the factory induction wear hardening; refurbish the guides; and obtain a new intake manifold to accept the new different angle of the center 4 bolts used on the injection heads: I'd expect you're well into the cost of some new heads.

I highly recommend you do some shopping along with a super serious look at what rebuilding the 305s will really cost. Even pumping 200 dollars into a set of heads plus another 200 for an intake that fits them, will swallow 2/3s the cost of better heads to start with. Then add the cost to really rebuild the 305s simply to get them to true minimal functionality on a 350 will cost as much or more than a decent set of 350 heads out of the box.

I've seen so many people start down the road of the minimum cost solution so many times only to find out the true cost of repair exceeds anything they ever thought possible and get in so deep that what they end up with is a super high cost low on performance solution because they're in so deep they can't afford to stop and no longer have the financial resources to complete a refurbishment of the parts.

305 on a 350

I bought a set of vortex rebuilt heads on e-bay, delivered to my door for little less than 300.00. you have to shop tho. Ask what the s/h will be to your zip code and add the price you will pay. I was set to spend 350.00
As Dennis the Meanies said, you can't tell how deep a mud hole is look at it from the top. You might have to step in. lol
