305 power
i have a 80 truck with a 305. I was wondering why i can't light up the tires when i punch it??? it just put a edlebrock cam, holley carb, cb3 edlebrock intake, curve kit and new cap rotor and wires. is it because it is a 305 or what??

What size carb and what are the specs on the cam?
If you have to big of a carb or cam on a stock 305, it can really hurt what little performance the 305 had originally. Brad |

i have 3.42 gears no posi or limited slip. the carb is 600. the cam Performer-Plus Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft & Lifter Kit Lift: .420''/.442'' Duration: 278°/288° RPM Range: Idle-5500 have the timing set at 38 degrees. have auto,no stall. the truck feels a whole lot more powerfull after the upgrades. it pulls really strong 2nd and 3rd up to 5000 no problem. but the thing is it kind of doesn't have thottle response as what i thought it has. i know it is a 305 and it wont have the tq as a 350 but i thought i could at least squeel the tires a little. don't have headers on yet ran out of money. i just can't figure out why it hesitates a little when you punch it. i might retard it a little see if that will help with lower end tq.

if it hesitates a little, the carb isnt tuned or your timing is not set correctly. the 305 in my 79 Malibu with 800 extra pounds in the trunk can light the tires up enough to grenade the low roller clutch/sprag assembly on my trans. and im running stock torque converter and 2.29 open gears.
if you have an automatic transmission, you have a stall converter. its commonly referred to as a torque converter. Dale |

k derek. i have an 83 chevy with a 305 so unlike the other people in this room i know EXACTLY what your talking about. you punch it, it goes down, hesitates a little, then starts reving up. what i noticed about the 305 is that they all have vacuum problems i think its just the nature of the motor. i installed a larger cam and i killed my low rpm and hesitated even more even though when i eventually got up it felt more powerful. installing any cam will effect initial output and throttel response in some way. they just seem to make 305s suck even more. also like the guy above said try tuning the carb. i hope this helps.
