305 small block chevy hp.

hey i just picked up a 305 c.i. small block chevy motor its a 1980 to 1985 motor with a factory 4 bbl and it is supposed to be high output. it may have come out of a trans am does anyone know about what the horsepower rating would be. i keep getting allot of different answers. thanks stick

If I remeber right the max HP output on a H.O. 305 is around 180.

the late 80's ones out the the camaros were all the way up to 220 horse. Carbed, flat tappet cam motors with the old heads I would figure about 160. I had a two bbl motor from 77 that was 140 horse stock, so a bit up from that, although I doubt much improvement was to be found in the heads, which is where it would count, by 1980.

what HP?

The only 305 4 bbl ratings I can find in my Chiltons for 80-83 are 150 HP@3800 and 240LbFt@2400. I looked under all the chevy cars.

L69 305HO engines were rated at 180hp in the monte carlo ss. Same engine (if I remember correctly) was later rated at 190 in the F-body.

Start with exhaust, headers, a nice dual plane intake - I'm also running a compucam 2040 in my L69 305. But I'm replacing the 305 with a 355...

thanks kevin . yeah im putting on an edelbrock manifold a carter carb and headers. this is a starter motor for my 34 chevy pickup after its all built and i run it around a while i may change motors.

i still have a 305 did every thing to make it faster
headers dual free flowing exhaust
mild cam speed pro 2000
edelbrock manifold +600cfm carb
heads mild to 10:0 comp
full ported heads gasket matched
pulleys
ram air with pro flow edelbrock air cleaner
electric fuel pump
accel coil
electric fan
i think this 305 Haze 200 hp
