305 timing
 
Hello everyone i need some moral support i have an 88 firebird with the 305 tbi im trying to get the timing in i put the engine at tdc. took the distributer cover off and the rotor was pointing towards the tbi not #1 so i pulled the dist. out turned the oil pump shaft to the desired location towards #1 now it well not start did i do anything wrong by turning oil pump shaft or do i need to set the spark plug wires back on cause of the differance on the rotor the reason why i was messing with the timing is that when the car is going 45 to 60 at a steady speed it would start hesitaing like if it was a stick shift when you pop the clutch to hard but well not do it when the engine is cold in the morning thanx for yall help really appreciate it

Just finished a 78 trans-am with the same problem.The pontiac manual has this procedure.Bring #1 cylinder to TDC then turn crank with socket or wrench until timing mark is at 0 on the tab. Point the rotor button between #1&#8 towers on the HEI distributor then drop it in. Hopefully you do have an HEI distributor. GOOD LUCK
