307 olds in my opinion is a grenade, there is barely any main webbing same goes for the olds 350s after 78 and the 403s which is a real shame cause olds used to make a nice stout engine.I changed an engine for a guy a few years back out of an 86 98 and when I pulled the engine out the crank(three journals)was sitting on the crossmember with the mains and webbing still attached along with several broken rods,it also tore the front pump out of the tranny.I have also rebuilt several that had cracked pistons(mostly #2 & #7)these engines have no power to speak of and definatly won't take any abuse.had one in my 89 caddy, changed the oil and that was the end of it,within 2 days it was spraying for mosquitos.but as for your question the 86 should have a flat tappet cam and the 87 should be a roller
