307 sbc

Would it be worth throwing some go fast goodies on it or just do a normal build on it??? Im open to all opinions

307 is just a sbc same as the rest. If 1 horse per cubic inch is ok with you,then how many cubic inches does your car require?
the original 307 from GM came with cheap parts that made them less reliable,,example the first nylon cam gear I saw was on a 307 and it was worn out to the point of failure.

It might go in my 81 c10 when the 305 goes out but for now just build it back up and leave it on a stand till time comes to drop it in but I want it go faster then it did before a bolt ate the piston out and had to do a motor swap in my 72 c10

So your saying the engine swallowed a bolt and wiped a piston out in the 307? If that's the case then it'll need a rebuild as you know and the problem with these engines are you can't get a set of decent pistons for it. The only pistons you can get without spending a ton of money is the "rebuilder" pistons, these pistons have .020 knocked off the compression height which kills compression and quench. The only way to get decent compression and quench with them is to have the block decked to zero. Now, if the engine was reusing the factory pistons and you want basic street performance with nothing wild then slap a set of 416 casting heads off a 305 on it, add a Summit 1102 camshaft, double roller timing set, small tube headers with dual exhaust and a aluminum intake it'll give it great torque and good fuel economy with good performance. The 307 is pretty much a ugly duckling of the sbc family. It was created when GM engineers realized they needed a small cubic inch small block that would go in there economy cars. When the 283 was dropped from production, the 307 replaced it. All they did was take a 283 block and throw the crank from the 327 in it. These engines were never popular for 2 reasons. The first is there was never a performance version of it made. It came only with a 2 barrel carb, dirt low compression, small valve heads and a single exhaust system. The next problem is in the late 60's the cam used in the 307's was the 300 horsepower 327 cam and GM had a bad run on these which caused them to go flat quickly and usually wipe out the rest of the engine with it. That's not to say you can't get performance out of these engines as you can, however If your 307 needs a build and new pistons I wouldn't bother investing the money as it would be cheaper to build a 350 which is 43 cubic inches bigger. You could throw the 307 crank in a 350 block and you'd have a 327 which is what I'd do, but that's just me.

My opinion...scrap the 307 block and get a 350 block. Keep the heads from the 307 and bolt them on the 350 block. I believe they had smaller combustion chambers and would increase compression ratio on a stock 350. I've never been impressed with the 307 and have never really seen one that produced any decent amount of power. If your goal is 1 hp per C.I. (cubic inch) then 307 hp versus 350 hp is substantial. But, its only my opinion.

Dang it..." DoubleVision" just gave you the long version of what I was trying to say. He must type way faster! LOL ! But he's dead on. The internal components for a 307 are limited and the quality of them is questionable as well. Just aren't any performance parts that I've seen for a 307. By the time you do any machine work to a 307 to get you any performance you've already spent a fortune to create limited HP that would be easily obtainable by bolting in say a 350 Vortec with low miles. Slap a good intake, carb and headers on a Vortec and you've got a pretty reliable and peppy engine.

The only thing worth keeping is the Crank and connecting Rods. The rest of the 307 is trash.

The fact that the common replacement "rebuilder" pistons have a reduced compression height
that drops the compression ratio even further can be a big plus if/when building a low compression ratio engine (7.5:1) to supercharge.
Use these pistons and a large chamber 76cc 350 cylinder head on your 307. The cr is a just right low 7.5:1
Now supercharge it with a Weiand 142 blower at 8PSI to 10psi boost and hang on ....!
(2.10:1 to 2.33:1 blower drive ratio)

Use the better smogger 76 cc chevy head like a 441,-487, 920, etc and home port them for more flow. (1.94x 1.60 valves and generous home porting) {avoid all the 307 heads, all 882's and 462624 heads}
Use a moderate blower friendly cam in it. EG Crane HMV278-2.

The low compression ratio allows you to use agressive 10PSI boost on pump gas for lots of power.
That lowly 307 is now a 400+++ hp 350 killer. You will slay your fair share of Camaros with that truck
with a lil blown 307.
The pistons are cheap and available in various bore oversizes..
Do not use the stock 307 heads. (small valves/small ports) Find the 76cc 350 heads and improve them.
Thats what you do to a 307 for your truck. The pain you inflict by blowing off the competitors with their 350'a snd 383's is doubly delicious when done with a tHrEe- -OOOH--sEvEn !

My little GMC s-15 slays its share of camaros and mustangs...usually to a very dismayed look on the owners face...which is priceless

I dont argue the fact that money buys speed...but I'm certain that most mustang and camaro owners have far more money wrapped up in their rides then I have wrapped up in mine. I just appreciate a street sleeper that is unassuming. I also appreciate all forms of muscle cars, hot rods and customs. I have a great love for mustangs and camaros...but people expect them to be fast and perform.
I'm as proud of what I've built as anyone is of something they built. Putting your time, heart and soul into building a ride is what brings satisfaction...anyone can put money into a car.

re size your digital pictures before posting them. Use Irfanview. its a free download.
50MB to 75 MB JPG file size and 640x480 resolution is plenty big.

The raw file size and picture resolution that your digital camera produces is way too big for internet posting.
