3116 Cat Diesel

Thanks for this forum and this opportunity. I have been told that the Cat 3116 diesel engine is not as good as most others. I have also been told that it is so poor that it drove Cat nuts. I see that there are some long time Cat professionals on this forum so am looking forward to getting your opinions. Thanks, Dwight

re: 3116 Cat Diesel

I can say this, I have worked on them when I was at the Freightliner dealer, they used them in some of the business class trucks and Motor-homes. They were in the shop regularly with drivability issues. Some of them were due to operators not maintaining the oil changes. Which was not causing catastrophic engine failures but fuel injection problems. I think they have it all worked out now but the early ones were crap. I'm still glad I don't have to work on them anymore. Now I work on Cummins 6bt and ISB . They are pretty reliable. I have several with 400k plus running up to 300 miles every day. Most still have the original fuel injection pumps and turbos. I have a couple with original engine, trans and rearend. The trans are the Allison AT542FE. The ISB however isn't proving to be as reliable,we have just replaced 2 of them with one a little over 300k and one just under. We have 5 in our fleet and time will tell the tale about the rest.I also work on the Mercedes 2.8l 5cyl in the sprinter, vote is still out on it. See ya Brian
