318/72 Dart build questions
Right now i have a 72 Dart with a 318 that is built fairly well and when it is running right it pulls really hard. My friend just got a '73 Camaro and is dropping a 454 in it to make into a street strip car. He is going to go with a big cam(not sure on specs), high rise intake manifold, headers, and some different carb(not sure on specs). I am not sure what it is going to be putting out but Im wondering what it would take for me to keep up with him.
My 318 has 10:1 compression pistons, 360 heads, big cam(kid I bought the car from didn't tell me anything about it), long tube headers, high rise intake manifold, and a 750cfm Carter AFB Competition Series carb. The transmission has been rebuilt with a shift kit and the rear end has a detroit locker and 4.88's in it.
I have read that it takes quite a bit to get a 318 to 450hp and if I were to pull my 318 I would rather start with a better platform. My dad has a 383 sitting in a 70 Coronet parts car that I could use and wondering if what it would take to get that up to spec with a 454.
One of the more extreme ideas I had that would allow me to not pull my 318 again was to do a rear mount twin turbo. That would cost a fair amount of money and take some time but I think the end result would be fairly cool. If I did it I would run 6-7psi and I have been told that the almost stock internals should be able to hold low boost like that. The thing I do have over my friends Camaro is weight, I think I will be around 3000lbs and he will be at around 3600lbsl.
Thanks for the help,
Dan
