32 Ford spring help!

Ok not exactly a 32 Ford...

I have a 48" Ford superbell axle and I need a spring for it.
The Speedway catalog says a 31" spring should work right?

Now the complicated part..

It's actually an air spring front as shown below.
The pic was taken using a 3" spacer, the min height of bags.

The maker ( a guy on the HAMB ) calls it a 31" spring, but as you can see it is pretty short. (both side look the same)

Is a 31" spring really 31" long, or does it get longer when you compress it?

Does anone make longer shackles, or do I have to fireup the welder to fix this? The HAMBer has a tail-light warrenty...

Thanks
Keith

The correct way to measure a leaf spring is along the leaf, from eye to eye, (see this page on the eaton detroit spring website)

IIRC, speedway sells springs by measuring from eye to eye, as the crow flies, so the measurement will actually grow with compression.

In a correct installation the spring will spread out enough to allow the shackles to hang at a 40 -45* angle when the weight of the car is on it .

Does that lever setup ever spread far enough to let the shackles assume that angle? Can you just move the inner pivot outboard to get the eye where you need it?

Running the shackles on a shallow angle is hard on bushings and shackle bolts.

Can you let some of the adjustment out of the perch and shim it up?

I know that's mickey mouse, but it may get you what you need, and it might not need as much as you think.

What does the rest of the crossmember look like?

Pictures please

Later, mikey

I could letout the perches but I'd rather remake the shackle end to make it work right. Thanks for the info on 45 degrees, thats what I was thinking but this is all new to me.

This is as low as it gets before the bags bottom out and as far out as spring arms go. If I lift it up the shackles straighten out even more.

The nominal ride height of the bags is 4.5" and I can't get the crossmember up that high

Here's a pic of the setup. Nicely lazer cut and pretty but need just a little more design to work right.

You wouldn't want to redrill the center holes a little outboard?

See the feeble little red circles?

Yea I was just out in my CCCCold garage measureing. The arms are 1 inch too short, so I could move the holes out 1/2" each.

Or move the shackle end out...

Decisions decisions
