327 7000 rpm easy torque?
I am putting a chevy motor in my Porsche 911. I need a motor that develops HP power between 3000-7000RPM. I do not want much low end torque. Tough on the transaxle. What are some combinations I could use?
What about a 327? Is it easy to run a shorter stroke on a 350. I am a Mopar guy but in this application I need a Chevy. I love Chevy's I just do not know the engine combo's. Thanks for any suggestions! Register now (free) or login to remove ads |

I think we have found the perfect car for a 307 Chevy . Its a 3.875 bore with the 327s 3.25 stroke . Find one they are cheap ! Bore it out 030 over . That will be a 311 . Buy some good 5.7 rods Scat or Lunat with bushed ends . run full floating pistons CR 10.5 or higher. Also use ARP studs for the Mains . And a set of Brodix track 1 aluminum heads 221cc / 67cc angle plug . For the intake go with the victor JR and a 700 Holley DP . MSD for the ignition . This engine will be down on low speed torque but will be all about HP .

You could copy a chevy 302; big bore, short stroke. Or you could do a later LS1 engine. They're lighter, larger, and will spin to 7000 with a few upgrades.
Sounds fun

221cc angle plug race heads with an effective compression ratio of 9.5:1 on a 3.915" bore? Better lay off the Hot Rod mags and Jeg's catalogs and take a walk in the real world. tom |

Then you shoud know that there are no off-the-shelf pistons for the bore and stroke combination you speak of that will give you the compression needed with 67cc heads to make any kind of usable horsepower, especially with the breathing capacity of the Brodix heads. The OP would better off with an 11:1 327 or 331 with a cam like the old Z-28 grind. Plenty of RPMs with soggy torque until 3 grand or so. Wouldn't cost an arm and a leg just for the pistons alone. BTW, I',m all for domed pistons when they make good sense for the build. tom |

You should also know that the 327 is in a small journal and large . The small journal rods will not hold up to that kind of long term RPMS ! And the 327s are not easy to find . But if you do go with one use a LG327 . You will be able to buy the good rods for it then . And the HC piston are available for a 30over 307 ! LOOK BETTER You also said crane never made these !

I know very well about the 327 LJ. I ran one for 19 years. Show me a listing for a good 12:1 307. tom |

I said: "Crane did not manufacture the castings. They ported the castings heavily (made the exhaust ports round, which we now know is counterproductive) and marketed them as "Fireball" heads. If they were not massively ported, they weren't Crane-modified heads. The guy selling them was misinformed." Crane did not make the castings. GM did. Crane modified them. READ BETTER. tom |

In other words, YOU can't find the listing. TRW used to make them. USED to. tom Last edited by machine shop tom : 10-31-2007 at 08:06 PM. |

BTW, 307s can be bored .125" over to make a stock bore 327. THAT would make sense and horsepower.
You can get pistons for it, too. tom |
