327 flexplate / flywheel bolts backing out

I have rebuilt my 327, but before doing so it was producing a lot of noise from the flex-plate area. It had ran for about 3 years before I acquired it with the only problem being low compression. I found that the flex-plate to crank bolts were loose when I tore the engine down and that the compression issue was due to the previous owner installing standard pistons into an engine that was bored 10 over. I have resolved these issues but thought that I heard the noise try to come back again yesterday despite using new bolts and thread lock during the rebuild. Does anyone have possible solutions other than replacing the crank?

it may be cracked.never had it happen to me but have talked to other people who said it does make noise and could be why your bolts came out.

Those bolts used to have "star" lock washers on them...........did you use them?

noise

I had a 73 350 pickup that got noisey. I pulled the flywheel cover and the flex plate was cracked between the holes. When I'd pulled it, there was only one finger between the holes that wasn't broken( cracked from hole to hole. When I removed it and threw it on the floor, the center broke out completely. The day befoe I was hauling a tractor up a long steep hill, if that thing had broke off then, I had a good time backing it down that curvey road. Pull the cover and look around, and check for looseness.

I did use the washers and I used a new flex-plate when I put the engine back together because I thought the other one might have gotten warped. The noise made before was very loud as if the gears were scraping something like the starter. I am certain that neither the crank nor the flex-plate were cracked when the engine was assembled. This just really has me baffled.

i had a 74 impala with a 400 and th350 tranny and i had a niose at the back of the engine that sounded like a bag of rocks bouncing around in the bellhousing or rear of the motor. it was a cracked flywheel, the hole thing was broke right around the bolts. i had never seen anything like it before and have never seen it since.
