First things I would check are timing, make sure that #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke, recheck plug wires, and ensure valves aren't too tight. Popping through the carb sounds like 180 degrees out.

I have done all that several times I set hydralic lifters at zero then 3/4 turn someone said 1/4 to 1/2 is better I am familiar with ignition timing not so much valve timing would the valve timing being off have same symtoms as timing being off I have never heard a motor spin with valve timing off ?? also I know just what you mean it acts like it is 180 out butit isn't if I need to I can pull cover and check mark alignment on cam and crank Thanks ,Michael

327 timing ??
When setting the timing you find top dead center by bumping thr engine over until air blow out around your finger. Then take a socket and breaker bar line up mark on 10 BTDC. Pull cap to see where rotor is pointing. Make sure plug wires are correct at this time. Here is a diagram of a Chevy V8 points distributor Google Image Result for http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/ASEMaster35yrs/2010-03-17_090540_chevy_v8_firing_order_diagram.jpg It should be close enough to start and set timing.

you say point rotor at # 1 do you mean bring #1 up to tdc then turn dist to # 6

I had the same problem it was 180deg off. Bring #1 up to tdc then pop your distributor cap off if your rotor is pointing to # 6 than it's 180 deg. off. Take your distruberator off and rotate it 180deg. with the rotor facing the number #1 it should turn on. To advance your timming turn the distributor counterclock wise.
